METAPHORICAL ANALYSIS OF PROSPECTIVE CLASS TEACHER CANDIDATES’ ATTITUDES TOWARDS MUSIC ACTIVİTIES

The purpose of this research is to determine metaphorically the attitudes of prospective class teacher candidates’ towards music activities. The study was carried out with 108 students studying in the Mersin University Faculty of Education in the 2017-2018 academic year. Phenomenological design, one of qualitative study methods, was used in the study. The data were collected through the form of determining the attitudes of prospective class teacher candidates’ towards music activities in which there was the expression “The music activities is as …………….; because ……………..”. With this form it was aimed to determine the metaphorical definitions which the prospective participants made related to the music activities and the common features of these metaphorical definitions. The data were categorized using the content analysis and frequency analysis technique. The categories were evaluated under 3 categories which were named positive attitude, negative attitude and ambivalence which was involving both positive and negative statements. The results of the study indicated that 84 of the metaphorical definitions, which showed the attitudes of the prospective participants towards the music activities, fell into the positive category while 15 of them fell into the negative category. In addition 9 of the metaphorical definitions were found to be ambivalent. In light of the obtained data, it can be concluded that the majority of the prospective participants attitudes towards the music activities were positive according to the metaphorical definitions they made.
